Alright! Nice to have a year-round music hangout, to try new techniques (cover songs can teach you so much) and get feedback. Sharpens your skills.

I’m on board for keeping this going. Agree with Kathy that there is a lot to learn from covers. In the last month I’ve recorded at least double the amount of covers that I’ve posted, only to find that they don’t suit my voice, can’t find the right key or for whatever reason just sound terrible!
And I really want to develop my recording skills, using covers to practice seems a good way to do it as the voice in my head tells me that I’ll ā€˜ruin’ my original songs if I record them badly- much better to just leave them in my head where they still sound ok

there is a lovely truism read on fawm years ago that even if you think you’re copying the original exactly…worried.too close?
…you cannot help but put some of YOU in it, it shows through and therefore it is changed…different…your version

My usual approach to covers is to make them as different from the original as possible.
Why would I want to make a song that sounds exactly like the original?

This site offers some default information about posting and etc., and, I read it all as I do by habbit. There’s an interesting ā€œthingā€ with ā€œpostingā€, in this field of study (music, communication and online) - concerning ā€œInductiveā€ and Deductive" communication and what/how to post ā€œonlineā€; ā€œOnlineguageā€ I call it : )

Way back in, circa 1995 when Browsers were launched, (long before song-groups existed), after many years of other ways to be online - and not easy - it was an actual ā€œcurriculumā€, (no longer it seems).

So, so what? : ) lol! most/many folks are Deductive and one or two lines while others, though not as common get into paragraphs - ā€œscreensā€ even : ) hahh! Again, so what?

Well if folks, as I read and just really enjoy the content above - get into - e.g., "oh, I covered these songs, posted/not posted and learned (as I did a few years back), I sing well in ā€œDā€ but if put my capo up 3 frets, same chords and ā€œmelody noteā€, e.g., D, G, A and say for D-chord, melody note is ā€œdā€ but keeping all the same, that note is now ā€œfā€, however still in that ā€œoctaveā€/range, just 3 half steps up - I get a nice tonal texture without a ā€œBeltā€-ing style and not ā€œFryeā€ – if saying all that correctly - correct if misstated please. That, ā€œthatā€ may/should be - labored/written out - in that posting, as was above for that/this ā€œinteractionā€, supposition and expanded ā€œgroup learningā€. I learned allot but reading all of the above and get inspired by it, (so, ā€œthisā€, now is a result).

  • It’s not a track production evaluation, or otherwise ā€œhow-toā€ feedback - some feel can crossover into an unintended collaboration, as I’ve read in the past - but, somehow, for me anyway, how I’ve learned in my past, with in person comments like - ā€œshut up and play, don’t worry about the music, play the instrumentā€ (I’ll never forget : ) - from an old jazz musician in an old mafia bar when a dishwasher there working illegally : ) ).

So, I’ll have to remain deductive : ) lol! and leave it there. If don’t get it - skip it as I like to say. However, over time then as folks ā€œgetā€ what you are doing and from a different country, culture, time zone - you’ll have to eventually say far less, and get ā€œmore helpfulā€ reaction/comment.

That’s how for e.g., with me - ā€œsounds good, like itā€ came about for me, to/from me.

  • After being around certain others, I either said nothing, or ā€œsgliā€ : ) ā€œTheyā€ or I knew what was meant and/or could have a quick email if needed.

I kind of did it this time, Rocktober, as short as this is - unintended, if seemed interested - and how the ā€œcross pickingā€ amended thread note occurred. So, on that, last night - I just got a very comprehensive msg from an associate of this person that sounds like two if not three guitars are playing, but it’s just him, one acoustic - only. So, he has some pretty specific chord changes to then keep that ā€œcross-pickā€ pick pattern and play that ā€œmelodyā€ - tltr so leave that. I always look for new ways to play, if even then - don’t. (I’m just a flat picker, chunking along and always will be due to my percussive, drumming background, I suspect.) However, back to ā€œother thingsā€ gained -

  • I remember the first time as a kid, out of nowhere, I ā€œran the neckā€ quickly from lo-G to below the 15th fret, with distortion, and slap back, and - krapped my pants - ā€œwas that me, where did that come fromā€ - but had been banging on penta-blues-boxes, dosed off : ) and vwah-lah. I woke up from that dream state, zone - startled, but happy and then (omg) - bored since saw it was ā€œreally nothingā€ - a bad attitude to self-criticize, habit to break!)
  • We do need to appreciate our own ā€œgainsā€ over time since was a time - we did not play - at all; so, not nothing.

It’s those stories I remember from way back that helped me that many don’t get exposed to ā€œtodayā€ and possibly, not online.

So, that above is just me, kicking that door open of more framing if posting covers and with a where, how and what and what was gained (i.e., my ā€œsquishy chick songsā€ Roctober - lessons learned and added on - ā€œgrowthā€ after decades of "playing. Glad I thought to do it and share it and explained on it. It had good effect if not for me, others too). I love when folks tell me, ā€œhey, give this a tryā€¦ā€ so to speak, etc.

Anyway - or not, lol! : ) Just say’in - if keeping posting and for the learning curve element, my thoughts.

me too…but its niice to know

I’m happy to keep the site running all year, BUT… my partner is getting laid off, and money is currently tight. Running the site costs me $16/month ($12/month for hosting and $48/year for the domain), and even though it’s not a lot these monthly expenses quickly add up and I spent the last couple weeks getting rid of my subscriptions (Netflix, SiriusXM, YouTube Premium, etc.) trying to save some money. I already run another site at a loss (https://lemmy.studio/), and it’s not a good feeling.

If we want to keep https://rocktober.club/ up all year I can set up a PayPal link for donations. There might even be a plugin that integrates directly with Discourse, I’ll see if I can find anything.

16x12=192 / 50 users if count is correct in that banner = $3.84 knottaproblem ; )

  • Otherwise, if understanding this, it goes away and is redone again next year ā€œcleanā€ all new?
That last sight was a ā€œFranceā€ based offering, and worked in it’s own ā€œspecialā€ way : ) lol! - lots of ā€œFrenchā€ had to be stripped out, which was kinda funny, if not fun to track down, like ā€œSubmitā€ ā€œEnvoyerā€ I think it was, etc. But, it was something and better than prior and keeps getting better yet. ā€œFreeā€ so to speak, is not always free! - to be sure! Someone pays if even in minutes of their days…

I WILL DONATE…If we get some critical mass of people to donate the site stays open…maybe just until FAWM but that would be OK. Agreed??

I’m more than happy to contribute, and if it’s not too much of a hassle we decide on a monthly basis if we want to continue, if enthusiasm drops off by the new year/FAWM. @beto have you already paid the $48 for the domain for the year upfront? If yes then we should make the most of it. And if yes but we decide not to continue I’m still happy to contribute something back to you, as I’ve been having fun and really appreciate that you set this up.

Well : ) check my math, but $3.84 times 50 users (if correct) that pays for the entire next 12 months in full/total. It’s not complicated.

Moreover, if folks decide to contribute more - for the courtesy to Beto and Fuzzy - even better. I know it was less than optimal to see the criticism of the last few prior Rocktobers, wondering why all was not as they liked it : ) hahhh, well, they got what they didn’t pay for if nothing else. Sadly, many folks that work online regardless of money collected otherwise - do it because they just do - I did/do : ) lol! (and get no part of what’s collected).

Moreover, from how I read Beto’s response - he’s willing to do it - nontheless - typical Beto.

Anyway - if it gets cleared out, that’s fine too. However, then - consider next year allowing donations of any amount. I’ve found, for instance on tracks for example or other things I’ve done online, rather than specifying an amount - voluntary donations typically are more than I’d ask for like $5 for a track that is typically $0.50 to $1.00.

So, in case my initial text was confusing (and likely as I do it is) - maybe that clears that up. Otherwise, it be what it be : )

Totally get it! Besides, I’ll probably need some downtime. FAWM will be here soon enough. Thank you so much for doing this!
