Following up with the discussion on How long after 31st for list/commenting?, it seems like a lot of people want to keep the site running all year. I’m all for that, but as I also explained in the thread I’m trying to save some money and I was not expecting the additional cost of running the server all year round ($16/month).
I set up a spreadsheet with all the expenses. It’s not much: registering the domain was $42.40, since I paid upfront for 2 years, and when we have to renew the domain in 2026 it will be $48/year. The site runs a software called Discourse, which I deploy to a virtual computer in Digital Ocean for $12/month.
A few things to notice: the server is currently running at 85% memory utilization, so if the number of users increase too much we might need to move to a bigger virtual machine, which would increase the cost to $24/month. We also need to add backups, but I can use a personal cloud for that at no cost, at least initially.
Also, instead of running Discourse on Digital Ocean we could pay for a hosted version, but it would cost $20/month without a custom domain, and $100/month if we wanted to keep using rocktober.club.
With all that being said, here’s my PayPal for people who would like to donate: robdealmeida@gmail.com
I’ll update the spreadsheet with any donations we receive, so that we can keep track of the incoming money. Thanks for everyone who’s willing to support the site, and for those that can’t, don’t worry about! Just make the world around you a little better however you can.
What I did, just now:
Went to bandcamp and purchased an album. So, not sure how that shows up on your end, so, did that just now. I have no idea what login may be resident at any time : ) lol! Hopefully ustaknow.
Anyway -
that spreadsheets great - however some may not read : ) (when does that happen online?) or “get it” - the detail (I’ve had that problem once or twice online - hard to believe I know! : ) ) …
$186.50 (total cost presently for the year), divided by potentially 50 folks = $3.73 for the ENTIRE year, through and untill next year.
So, it’s not $3.73 per month 3.73 x 12, - no - it IS in total $3.73 for all of the 12 months if all 50 folks were able to contribute.
But, yes see Beto’s prior other comments here too, and that he is willing to just do it nonetheless - regardless.
I hope that’s helpful, my only intent, and buying from Bandcamp is what I’ve done in the past to get money to folks fast and easy (covering the fees as well and etc.).
im amazed ive got to 7 thanks to the extra time…we rock…site is nearly as cool as we all are…i dont really talk like that but SELF PROMOTION SELF PROMOTION is this 2024 world …sigh x
