This is my list so far:
I have been wanting to do a cover of Trains Across the Sea for a long time, so I think that’ll be my Rocktober project. I’ll have to think about what I want to do after that, but that song has been calling to me for a very long time.
But I change my mind all the time, so we’ll see where I’m at in a few weeks lol
@beto - Not Strong Enough is a fantastic song! I look forward to your cover of it. I’ve been mainlining boygenius and the boys’ solo work for awhile now. So blinkin’ great.
I’ve been a fan of Julien Baker since her first album, saw her life in Oakland back in 2018-ish. So good!
Some that are on my list:
- XO (Beyonce/John Mayer)
- Can’t Blame a Girl For Trying (Sabrina Carpenter/Meghan Trainor)
- Paint It Black (The Doors)
- Moon Over Bourbon Street (Sting)
- Look At Miss Ohio (Gillian Welch and David Rawlings)
These are off the top of my head. I also have a John Prine I just typed up and a Beatles cover I need to add to my 100+ Beatles cover I’ve done, but it’s late and I can’t remember the titles.
I’ve covered these three! Great songs.
Funny - Paint It Black” is on my list - I’ve been trying it out - not happy with my results so we’ll see…
Miss Ohio is a great song! I used to add banjo when a friend would play it.
Deleted this post because I’m still learning this site! (Replying to beto):
Love The Cure and New Order songs. The Cure is, to me, great workout music. And recently took a bit of a dive into the catalogs of New Order and then Joy Division.
What key are you working in? For my voice, Am is pretty good, and the riff works on ukulele in that key.
Good idea! Maybe I’ll play it on banjo uke for my cover.
Have others heard the Frente Cover of “Bizarre Love Triangle?” I heard it before the original, back in high school, and I really like it.
Oh yeah! That was actually the first version I heard of the song, it was big in Brazil in the 80s. Then years later when I heard the New Order original I was shocked by how much better Frente!'s version is.
I didn’t want to start a fight but I agree it’s better!
I need to be inspired to figure out some songs but I was thinking of maybe Hand Me Down World by the Guess Who.
Ooo, I do love an Am - thanks! Will give it a try.
I’ve spent a ton of time this year diving into the history of The Ramones and Misfits, so I am pretty sure they will pop up at some point. But I may have more of an interest in putting my style on some covers. I tend to be pretty true to the original (mostly because I am unsure what ‘my sound’ is) but experimenting is fun… Maybe some She Wants Revenge. We’ll see what strikes.
Yes, I’ve already started a list of covers I’ve wanted to do after 50/90, which made me even happier to find out about Rocktober! Ones on my list already:
Melissa Etheridge - “I Want to Come Over”
Billy Bragg - “Little Time Bomb”
Mannequin Pussy - “Drunk II”
Snail Mail - “Pristine”
Fuel - “Shimmer”
Matthew Sweet - “Sick of Myself”
I’m trying to start a list. I’ve been doing “Covers from the Attic” videos on TikTok lately, where I play a cover on acoustic guitar in our unfinished attic. So I’ve done a fair number of covers recently, but for this I’ll want some bigger production. Should I do more full-up versions of songs I’ve covered already this year, or pick new ones? That’s what I’m wrestling with right now.
