Where I'm From by Shelby Lynne

I’m so fond of this song. I remember watching Shelby Lynne play it on a TV show we have in the UK called Later with Jools Holland (circa 1999). I immediately fell in love with the song (and also with Shelby :joy:). Anyway, I think my dad bought me the CD, and I played it to death for about six months straight. ‘I Am Shelby Lynne’ - it’s a fabulous album if you haven’t checked it out.

Super cool, David! Hadn’t thought of Shelby Lynne in awhile. I remember Shelby from the early 90s during my “starting over” phase - specifically “I’m Feeling Kind of Lonely Tonight.” Special times!

that performance on jools hooland is hard to match. i love the acoustic guitar and piano accompaniment. she has the kind of delicate phrasing that i love in dionnne warwick. her sister, allison moorer, is pretty awesome as well. you have a bigger sound and i love the way you sing the place names, especially since you are not from that area of the world, and you sing the song as if you were. i think she had some subtle backup singers on the jools program, and your back up vocals are subtle like hers were.

Her phrasing is unbelievable, and there’s a softness and closeness which I could never get in a million years. There’s some awesome string parts on the recorded version too. Feels like one of those songs I’ve lived alongside for a long time, so maybe those place names seem like home to me even though I’m a Londoner!

My father was a big Shelby Lynne fan. This is a great version of the song.
