Remembering how ubiquitous that album was (I used to play songs like Country House and Charmless Man in my very first band), and this was always one of the best tracks on it. That melodic leap into the chorus with all the strings just hits you every time. Great version, you’ve captured that feeling of being whisked away in your version. Might have to go and listen to the original and briefly relive my youth…
although im a morrissey fan, i loved charmless man. it was the only song off the great escape that i used to cover. i much preferred park life, from which i used to cover four songs. the great escape tour was excellent though, with the soundman running ragged with all the horn and string samples. when i saw them, there was a long queue outside the club, and damon was leaning against a wall smoking a cigarette. a girl from london was amazed that nobody approached him. “in london, he couldnt do that or he would be mobbed,” she said. some years later, i was working in a record store and two guys came in and mentioned they were doing a show in town that night. i asked the name of their band and they answered Blur. i didnt believe them, as they were not in blur. but that night, i went to the blur concert, and there they were…new members in a reformed band without Graham Coxen. It wasnt a bad show, but it wasnt Blur.
This is a new one to my ears. What a lovely soaring melody. I enjoyed your expressive vocals and guitar accompaniment. It feels like you really like this song - I am going to check out the original. Nice cover Bill!
