"Showdown" by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)

Rocktober Cover - Showdown by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - a First Pass One Take, acoustic, phone recording for “Rocktober”.

Link that works, hopefully, to the track: [ BandLab - Make Music Online ]

(It seem this, their BandLab link only displays that text, no control - it is their embed url to that track specifically. Feel free to leave any feedback there if prefer. - Happy Rocktober!)

I love those gravelly vocals - makes me prefer this version over ELO. Well done!

Oh my, thank you! I just rediscovered my Capo and was experimenting with it on 3rd fret. It pushes in a different direction. After coughing and hacking a bit - got somewhat used to it  lol! I guess I am a lazy vocalist - will have to “sing” more. - Again, thank you.

Good to see you back ustaknow! This is a great cover, I like the guitar and vocals.

Oh, thank you very much! There was a time, I only did phone recordings, 1st take, one-pass. I’ve missed it and what’s the difference anyway! lol! It’s been fun revisiting it; I very recently switched from i8 to an Android - so different, but the i8 was really, really old too!

I like the contrast between your lower vocals and the higher guitar. As others have mentioned, I really like the gravel in your voice - especially when it pops in a long held note - it adds a really cool texture. BTW I have been recording on my Android phone - not sure what mode it is in, but it is an older phone - Samsung Galaxy S8.

I had to look mine up on the system config, it’s a REVVL 7 - the carrier branded it and (therefore?) - came with much of what the others costing 2-3x’s more offer, but had to read allot to find out.

  • I remember why I had to install an Audio App - I’m not a fan the Google which then, like a virus takes over (for me anyway - I got stories lol!). So, could not “turn on” any of their stuff and did as explained. I’ve had some collaborators that recorded on an Apple with some app, sitting under two chairs and a heavy comforter (for silence) in their closet that sound better than most in formal home studios lol! - it’s just amazing. And, they just click buttons just “because” lol!

When I do “record”, having used or tried to use most known DAW’s I stick with Audacity (which shocks many for some reason) - since I can record with two separate Mics, and “Render” each as a *separate sound source as if recorded separately, separate tracks, while singing and playing - no dub for the 1st pass, 1st take. It’s a very manual app, esp the older versions - almost like recording with “Tape”, so to speak, (real multi track, or at least 2-track).

Anyway, and nonetheless, for all that effort, time - “this” (phone recording), IMO ? really who can hear the difference for a bounce track.

  • No, I don’t get the far L/R separation, however when wifey or mom (kidding) listens - it’s all just so fantastical anyway  omg! And, us regular folks like “here” are listening for other stuff anyway in a “demo”, etc. You know what I mean.

Years ago, the phone, or a remote type unit was all I ever used - I capture more stuff this way versus “setting up” with 2 mics at a daw. The phones, or this one, I have to be no less then 3 ft away or it “overloads” - which to me is amazing and not sound like “down the hall” like it used to - get full signal saturation, so to speak. (I discovered Phone Holders and can clamp them to anything to sit in front of, chair back, old camera tri-pod, etc. if want to get “fancy”.)

Yes, BandLab has some real ez overlays that will do the minimal stuff and export to any format I’d use. But, I’ll stop there or get long on stuff no one needs to hear about from me lol! We all got our own ways!

Anyway, hahh, “Red River Valley”, omg, I remember being 6yo and singing maybe that and “Row, row, your boat”, etc., in school, never thought I’d one day record it. But, even Dylan worked that story into a track Red River Shore I think it was - the stuff I like of his, most never hear of, like others that I like.
