just a thought … website is great , why not? no pressure
Who is “we”? I do love having 50/90 available.
Hey, folks! I wanted to clarify some things:
-
We created this space for Rocktober last year. After Rocktober people asked to keep the website running all year as a place to post songs during the off-season, and @fuzzy offered to take over the website. Because of the complexity of running the sofrware we agreed that he would be the admin and I would keep the server running. We have very few users (16/day was the peak during Rocktober), so the website requires very little maintenance from my side.
-
Since people have been posting songs all year, you’re welcome to continue posting songs during summer. If you do that, please don’t call it “50/90” or “Fifty Ninety”, as those are FAWM trademarks. Call it someone else.
-
Please don’t tell the FAWM community that “we’re hosting 50/90 at the Rocktober website”. That’s not what I meant. I meant that if you all — current users — want to post songs here for a summer challenge, it’s OK. But if we get hundreds of new users overnight it will become a second job for me, and that’s not what I signed for. The reason we’re not having an official 50/90 this year is because the FAWM team needs a break — and that includes me.
Thanks for understanding!
I figured it would be best to hear from Beto first! : ) I had a reply - and glad to see the concern for confusion or spinoff.
- Some may not “get all that” - it’s the challenge I myself run into.
For example, when Rocktober was put up on that French Server for two years - it was almost impossible to communicate that it was not part of their “paid” donation, service - got weird, sideways and fast, and the usual complaints by the few that complain, and yet don’t engage anyway (so, that’s always been a human nature confusion, online-ism : ) ). Not to mention that there were some odd issues there, i.e., hard coded French Language in critical buttons, like Submit : ) … “Envoyer” - not even intuitive, and et alia.
Anyway, the here and now - I love the organic way this all here has all been going, e.g., self-moderated - “we don’t need no stink’n badges” : ) and just how it’s been, should be among mature, adult “artists”, here, about the music! Yeehaw! It seems if folks like it, they use it, if not, they don’t - always a good way to be.
- I got the feeling, over time, that some like having “Rocktober” separated. Well, as e.g., the RPM Challenge still happened in February and the other 11 months will be “REM” and has been for many years. So, October, can be what it is, “here” - like that if analogous.
- Actually, for CR concerns, it enforces (original work) what makes “covers” (in this intent) more legitimate since, if a “teaching and learning” sight and covers can’t be sold here, not intended to be and etc. the complex legal jargon gets into. I will comment mine (my covers) had the agenda/theme of Stadium Editions to 1v1g, and possibly how to, discuss, feedback, comment, develop, etc. I certainly did not cover “Queen”, or “The Jackson Five” - but took “stadium orchestrations” and etc. So, if one looks up, teaching, learning, etc., fair use work, for discussion, lecture like the one or two high profile YT Music Interview/Analysis Channels, etc. (even then, he still get’s dinged).
So, again, per Beto’s concern if understand correctly:
$24 divided by how many folks, if get’s that far (?) … how to say, there’s signed up and then there’s actually here using it… so say, hypothetically
24 / 10 is $2.40 a mo * 12 mo’s is $28.80.
And, I think that’s “worst case” cost.
The thing is, if could be a challenge of unknowns with hard to make this clear for some folks - this is separate - for, from Beto, Burr. Again, I’ll comment my empathy, how to say - I overlooked allot of criticism : ) for allot of work I did freely, along with LowHum - it was interesting to watch the complaints and then, the very people that only do that and don’t engage anyway - nonsensical : ) stuff (it’s interesting psychology to watch online and seems it “has to happen” : ) ).
- And, why I have no problem paying something if needed since this is what it is and done out of passion for music and authentic fellowship. (Again, if happens or gets used to the point money is required.)
Otherwise, I’ll just do the REM stuff. I really don’t like “Discord” servers in their native deployment configuration (how RPM/REM is) - but, it works and I found that on (my Android cell phone) the App actually makes it easier (my old apple, not so much); and better in some ways than the PC Browser Interface. And, since a real, non-profit sponsors it - not a “private enterprise” - it just works like how many of the old things online used to - self moderated, and the focus only, on the MUSIC (the music…)… ah, yes, the music : ) lol! oh, yes and the m u s i c, nothing else.
Actually, the more I think about this, the more I dislike the idea.
I would prefer to keep Rocktober as a place for sharing covers, as originally intended, and keep it separated from FAWM and 5090. I’m a mod and dev there, and I don’t want to blur the lines between these websites.
if Burr wants year off so we can just ask him if he minds.
pretty sure he wont…and even send pepes over
x
sorry Beto …hadnt read your msg. Respect…you understand this better
I agree with Beto; Rocktober is Rocktober and 50/90 is 50/90 and never the twain shall meet.
Plus, as Beto said, as admins we don’t want to have to deal with that all summer.
agreed… others robinleaf? are planning an alternative. regards
When I saw the FAWM thread about an alternative to 50/90, and that Robin was offering to host something, I contacted her privately to tell her about the Rocktober set up. There have been so many conversations in the forum about what platforms people like or don’t like, I’m sure Robin was getting overwhelmed and wondering what she had let herself in for! I wanted to explain the simplicity of the posting and commenting format that seems to work nicely here, and didn’t want it to get lost in the noise (although I think Kathy might have mentioned Rocktober somewhere in the thread as well). Also, just to be clear, I wasn’t suggesting to her that a summer challenge piggybacks onto Rocktober, I agree with everyone that having something just for covers/reinterpretations (and occasional originals) is the best scenario here.
I don’t think Robin had signed up here last year so Beto I hope it’s okay that I mentioned your name to her, if she contacts you about how you set up Rocktober here then it’s down to me.
I think my Rocktober mention was to say that I’m not sure it’s the best venue for a 50/90 alternative because people don’t comment here like they do in the FAWM community. It could be sheer numbers or it’s just that most of my regular commenters aren’t here.
Fair point, apologies that I couldn’t remember exactly what you had said!
I think we just have a different kind of vibe here for a few reasons
- Rocktober comes off the back of 50/90 so people are not wanting to jump into yet another challenge/group so we started with a smaller group of people
- Not everyone wants to do covers
- Since about the second week of November, there have only been a core group of about 8 of us who have been regularly posting and I think we have all tried to support, encourage and comment where we can
That said, I think this set up on Discourse is pretty user friendly so could be utilised in a ‘FAWM-ish’ way. I have certainly found it easier to keep tabs on things compared to some of the Discord groups I am a part of (might just be me!). But essentially they all do the same thing don’t they?
Good points! I will definitely miss 50/90 if we don’t come up with an alternative. I enjoy 50/90 far more than FAWM because it allows time to interact with people more. A lot of people like to vacation and travel and enjoy the outdoor life with friends and family over the summer so 50/90 isn’t that interesting. I, however, live in Florida and we stay home and hide out from hot, humid weather and hurricanes in the summer so it’s the perfect time to write songs - lol!
Where in Florida? I’m from near Tallahassee, and next week will be in Gainesville for pole vaulting. It would be cool to meet you!
My cell is 623-337-6349
I like Rocktober for covers! If people want to do something with originals more like 50/90 this summer, I agree it should be in another venue.
Are you living in Arizona now? I’m originally from California, moved back and forth from Vegas to Florida - Tampa Bay, 2 miles from Disney, and now the Space Coast - trying it all out - lol!
