Mull of Kintyre (1977, Wings)

Based on physical sales, this is the 4th biggest selling single in the UK, and was the first to sell over 2 million copies. When streaming figures are included it still comes in at number 15 despite the streaming sales equivalent equalling just over 1000 copies!

Not my favourite Wings song and not even my favourite Paul McCartney number one released around Christmas- that goes to Pipes of Peace but it that didn’t hit number one until January 1984- kept off the top by one of my previous covers, Only You.

On a recent trip to Edinburgh my wife wisely vetoed my proposal to buy a set of bagpipes so didn’t get to include any here!!

Great track - I’ve never heard it previously. Interesting stats!

  • Too bad about the bagpipes, I love that instrument. I had a neighbor that used to play it daily in the evenings and would apologies if was bothering anyone. Not me, I’d’ve gone over with a snare-drum if asked : )

This is a good version of the song. Your vocal is very good and the ukulele is a lot better than a pipe band! BTW I grew up in the Mull of Kintyre at the same time that Paul McCartney was living there on and off. I never saw him but everyone who did said he was a very nice person.

i am on my knees in gratitude that no bagpipes were allowed to interfere with your delightful vocals on this lilting melody. the uke supplies a nice rthythm to urge the song along.

The bagpipes were a family joke because it seemed wherever I went (like napping on the beach after working late hours), the bagpipes would show up. They were my nemesis. Until I heard “Shake That Bagpipe” by SIDH and went nuts for the bagpipes - lol! So, yeah, too bad about the bagpipes! Vocals are as lovely as ever.
