Land of Confusion - Phil Collins

Well, I tried. Lol

I printed out simplified chords and just went for it… but could not for the life of me get the bridge thing right. It’s late and I’m moving on now. Day one done.

I wonder of this link will work

Yes the link works!

Don’t worry about not getting the bridge, done is better than perfect (if only I took my own advice!).

There are some quick chord changes in the song and you handled them very smoothly, some noticeable signs of progress in your playing.

It all works how it is. Good track.

Since commented challenged a bit, for me - and may not work for you - what I try to do is give myself “room”, esp on a guitar.

So, again, may make no sense for you -
your strum pattern was 1& 2& 3& 4&, was I hear as 8th Notes. One could try 1/4 Notes as the emphasized strum, beat. Or, if can, a Strum “chucka”, Strum “chucka, where the Strum is the single down stroke/strum beat and the “chucka” is a quick down/up (chuck-a) to the next Strum.

  • So I don’t have to think about it, what I do is write the Chord Change, Beat directly over the Lyrc-word and just Sing and let reflex take over the other part. So I am only singing and feeling, not thinking - beats or measures or any music theory at all.

How I hear many of his tracks is, he is just singing, and singing over, what I call “Piano” music - lots of Pedal/sustain, no beats, and the Beat, melody is his vocal track, dynamics. (Like Sinatra ? sings over Strings/Orchestra - can’t be wrong and eliminates issues in that regard and why they do that.)

A 1v1g Singer, a tougher job - generally speaking, connects the Right-hand/Strum to the Mouth dynamics as the “Beat”.

  • The Strum hits the emphasized Lyric-word and the “chucka” is the, who knows the timing syncopated fill, that moves the singing down the track.

Eh - another “how I see it” ism; again, may not help or etc. but since came to mind and remember you like comment, discussion - offered it.

  • I have been in a more of Writing Mode presently; so not sure I’ll get to covers. And when I do - I generally Re-Orchestrate the song anyway, not trying to do “them” - necessarily. (So, if the bridge is somehow ambiguous - re-interpret it and make it your own - but, I like the track as it is.)

Yes, the link works :slightly_smiling_face: Nice version. You kept going through the bridge and that’s a good thing. It’s. very good choice of song.

From where my ears sit, that’s great advice on the guitar strum. In my own personal experience, I’ve found that songs with guitar backing don’t quite match up with my vocal style, but piano does. My best accompaniments have been with piano. In this case, this song is very percussive heavy and that may not translate easily to guitar. As for the bridge, I think bridges are overrated - lol!

Thanks, everyone! Nice to hear from you all again. I’m hoping to get a chance to experiment with different orchestrations at some point this month using the Band-in-a-Box that I still haven’t learned. I’m excited about that!
