Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

End of a long day. Voice couldn’t quite belt those high notes. But a pretty song nonetheless.

This challenge is the bomb! Thanks, everyone!

I did a quick google search to see where this ranks in the most covered songs- a Newsweek article in 2021 only puts it at number 48 in the top 50 which surprised me. But on further checking about 35 of the other songs in that top 50 were either Christmas or Beatles songs!

I still think I hear something different with each new version, not least the guessing game of which verses are coming. And yours is lovely, so nice to hear this sung so gently without the need for either over-singing or over-production, or for it to sound a bit depressing. Well done!

That’s fascinating, @JoeyCyclone ! Thank you for sharing that. Also, thanks for the listen and comment.

i esteem leonard cohen as the best (near) contemporary lyricist, and this is far from his best work (despite its almost universal popularity), but i enjoyed hearing you sing this version that has been intelligently editied down to the essentials without losing sight of its potential scope. and much as i enjoy your singing, i am glad you didnt do all 80 verses. you have created your own version of the song by choosing three verses that cohere into a strong statement of faith and love.

Thanks, Bill. Eighty verses! Ain’t nobody got time for that

Of all the versions of this song, I love Leonard’s for its very imperfections, giving it character, revealing our humanity. That’s what makes it great! Your vocals are so lovely, offering its own specialness.

Thank you so much, @sbs !

i was thinking that since w both like leonard cohen and we both like each others singing and playing, maybe we could do a collab on his second most famous song, Suzanne, you could play it and sing all of it with the exception of the second verse, which i would sing to your music and i would also addd a second vocal to the chorus and add a seond guitar part. i think it would be fun and easy. if you dont want to do that song, but would like to collaborate on something else, id be up for that as well, if you thin a collab on suzanne would be fun, jusr record yourself playing it without singing the second verse(but playing it on guitar, send me the mp3 to bwhi51@gmail.com and i would do the rest.
