First appeared on the 1970 American Beauty album as a folk/bluegrass tune - my version is slowed-down like GD played it from 1976 on. I include a last verse by lyricist Robert Hunter that got left out of GD versions.
This is one of my favorite songs by the dead. I used to love the way dylan did it in concert. You show me a new way to hear it. that is always a good thing in a cover.
It’s a great “cowboy” song - which among many genre, I appreciate. The only thing I’ve done, even in a recent cover, shaky jake, changed the word “devil” to “trouble” - for some reason in these times, how to say it - folks don’t like that word. Anyway - as always, great work - it “fits” your style extremely well - way of playing, vocal syntax, intonation.
This is the only Grateful Dead song I know! I remember a friend learning the bluegrass guitar picking 30 something years ago and trying to teach me.
I like your version of it- slower but still a nice rhythm in your guitar playing
