Electric Guitars (Prefab Sprout)

In August I heard the Prefab Sprout bassplayer Martin McAloon play the songs of his band opening for Thomas Dolby in Wolverhampton. He apologized for not having the voice of his brother Paddy but the very supportive crowd was glad to get to hear the songs played by an original “sprout”. This song “Electric guitars” from the 1997 album “Andromeda heights” was not on the setlist.

No electric guitars were used during the recording of this cover.
A nylon guitar, one acoustic and some vocal tracks. Originally I planned to add bass but here we go.

Electric Guitars - Paddy McAloon (1997)

I’d a dream that we were rock stars
And that flash bulbs popped the air
And girls fainted, every time we shook our hair.

We were songbirds, we were Greek Gods
We were singled out by fate
We were quoted out of context - it was great.
Grander than Castles, Cathedrals or stars
Electric Guitars !
Riots in airports - everywhere that we go
Mascara meltdown - hysteria-a-go-go
Electric Guitars !

When I woke up I was laughing
Well what else was I to do
Every details of the dream I had was true

We were songbirds, we were Greek Gods
We were singled out by fate
We were quoted out of context - we were… great

Grander than Castles, Cathedrals or stars
Electric Guitars !
Riots in airports - everywhere that we go
Mascara meltdown - hysteria-a-go-go
Electric Guitars !

lovely guitars and vocals make me wonder if this is ieonic, like the burds so you wanr to be a rock and roll stoar, or serious, like oasis’;rockn roll star. you play it as a serious rock and roll fantasy, yet there is a touch of humour in it as well. never heard the original, and now i want to hear more from this band.

Thanks @BillWhite51 ! I believe that Paddy here is idolizing over the Beatles and Elvis but I might be wrong. Sometimes his songs are a bit sirupy but there are a lot of gems. A good start into the band’s catalog is the 1985 “Steve McQueen” album.

I like the guitars a lot - the combo really works and makes me think I should own a nylon string guitar again. Beautiful fingerstyle playing and that nylon string is so warm wounding. What a lovely song.
