In 2018, before I got involved in Rocktober, or 50.90 for that matter. I was a simle fawmer with nothing to do from march through january, so I worked on other projects, one of them being an album of covers by femake artists…dedicted to m mom and titled Female. since these tracks have never been exposed to the fawm community, I thought it would be fun to post them hereand biw, in this eternal rocktober that is losing a bit of steam, This one is by Merilee Rush, the darling of 1960’s Seattle pop, the girlfriend of promoter dj Pat O Day…all us boys were in love with her, and in 1980 I borrowed her bass and drummer for my band The Vacations.
Good to hear your version of this song Bill, it’s one of those that I never really think about but if it pops up on the radio I always like it.
Even if we are losing a bit of steam here, I’m still grateful that we have a few of us keeping Rocktober going. I’m following some online tutorials to try and improve my recording techniques (as well as trying to improve my ukulele/guitar/piano/voice) so it’s good to have the songs to practice with. I know ‘the experts’ say that learning covers is a great way to understand songwriting, so by the time FAWM comes around I’ll be unstoppable
I think you are already unstoppable. Learning covers expands your own songwriting palette in so many directions. For me, it is akin to muscle memory, in that learning someone elses song puts me into the physical state of the original, if that makes any sense. By the end of the process, I feel the cover to be my own song, and I have picked up on (although not mastered) the skills that went into the making of the song. It keeps me from the extensive repeating of myself musically by learning new rhythms new ways of phrasing, and various ways of making the best harmonic use of a chord change as it affet the melody. After hearing your covers, i am eager to hear your originals in february.
Love that song! Can hear the emotion in your voice. Nice! And I figured Rocktober would peter out - I’ve got a couple more “shorts” I’ll upload today.
