For most fans, the Eurovision Song Contest is synonymous with the LGBTQ+ community. A significant proportion of the fanbase are LGBTQ+ and a huge number of performers have been as well.
Most notably, 1999 saw the first trans winner, Dana International from Israel, and last year saw the first non-binary winner, Nemo from Switzerland.
In 2014, Austria’s contestant was a drag performer called Conchita Wurst, known as the bearded lady. What could have turned out to be a bit of a gimmick was actually a showstopper ballad with a huge orchestral arrangement leading to a win for Austria. 11 years later it has just come 3rd in a BBC radio listeners poll of favourite Eurovision songs of the 21st century (top of the poll was a recent UK entry, so recency bias and jingoism aside, one could argue that it came 2nd).
