"Put Your Lights On" - 1999, Whitey Ford aka Everlast aka Erik Francis Schrody

Links direct to BandLab track:

1-take 1st Pass phone recording, and then the dubs too, 1st time experiment with only Cell Tracks and BandLab DAW to dub.

This track kept popping up on my Ai feed - he wrote it while recovering in the hospital from heart surgery for a defect that he thought took him out - but did not. I see it credited as by Santana - which I am sure he’s fine with. However, Santana approached him - “got any songs” and they did this.

So, I cleaved together this orchestration ad hoc - can’t see doing a 4-5 min track : ) lol!

So, what happened - the phone caught allot more of the guitar than the vocal. There was no way to fix “that” wo a dub. So, never having used just a cell phone like that - tried it. Had to “feel” my way to sync the track since had to export from phone, email, download then upload to BandLab DAW (which to me is not “friendly” to use). And, never used the DAW for anything other than getting tracks there on BandLab.

So, not that it’s great or even good work - but, hahhh… I was kind of surprised how it turned out. So, then dubbed in the little penta-lick Santana develops in that track - again, all 1st take 1 pass and just kept an eye on the track time for insertion.

Anyway, another cover - didn’t really intend to do and certainly not “developed” in any way versus my 1+1’s.

  • I like Whitey’s acoustic, “acoustic-electric” tracks - the videos he edits together for many of them I find interesting - and not the Hollywood productions or glamour shots we normally (e.g., “Stone in My Hand”…)

Rich guitar sound! I listened with headphones are really enjoyed both the strumming and the riff/lick. Great deep vocals, too. I like that vibe. Went really well with the word “sinners!”

Oh, my, thank you - I appreciate the feedback, comment.

I’m a bit surprised it’s all an android phone, and in some parts heard the TV. The “solo”, so to speak, dub, I had the phone like 6" from the sound hole on the keyboard tray to “proximity” the ambiance of the room (noise : ) ) out of it. The phones all seem to “record” differently (makes sense - this does better than the iPhone, imo).

Anyway, I appreciate the comment - I could have a gold record on the wall and still “wonder” how stuff sounds to others… (what makes me know, real artists are “real” - as I’ve heard about them, like e.g., P. Simon comments, at one time he got, like *really afraid he could not and would not write another song, etc. - like “petrified” if may characterize it that way.

I think - what do I know, but, think part of (besides being a musician - separately), but picking songs to perform is to learn the songs “your style” might better be served. E.g., that song I covered early on here, “Show Down” by ELO - I stumbled across and gave it a try and could “hear/feel” an intonation, and blending with the Hz of the triads - then, when felt “freer” to just “wing” it however I cared to do it (not Note for Note it - not a good thing for me to attempt).

Anyway, I don’t mean to “go on” to much. But it really is surprising the equipment one may have, and may not, in this context anyway, “need” it : ) lol!

… oh, little more… an almost famous buddy of mine, drummer, was “going on” about these, made of Oak (wood) drum sticks or a specific brand and weight he purchased by the “Case”! Again, “petrified” ? - to not have them, for his timing to be thrown off. I picked up two sticks from the yard under an old Maple tree, handed them to him and said - “go ahead, show me how much you suck” : )

  • He’s “over it” now… but was convinced he HAD to have that “thing” or would “suck” - no. Funny to me, I used to see his stiffness in videos would tell him he needed to relax… he, was this, what I call ? “millisecond” timing off that if he was, actually - “off beat” relaxed, would sound so much better, if you know what I mean.

I think we have to do that for each other when may… it’s how we keep “artist” friends versus the annual turnover that often happens, it seems.

Anyway… oh well!! : )

However you reached the final recording, it has worked so well. A happy accident? It really does sound intentional. And there’s a bit of a trend for having the tv on in the background of our songs here at the moment, again it sounds intentional and adds to the moodiness of the recording.
