I wrote this during my very first FAWM. Randomly matched with another collaborator ; my job was to add melody to his lyrics. This was such a fun exercise! I hope you enjoy the song.

So, you put the music to the lyrics; who’s lyrics are they? Did you modify them at all, making it a co-write (pending how you-all defined, discussed that)?
Do you want “opinion” comment-feedback, or just sharing?

I always love feedback! Sometimes my collaborators are willing to change things and sometimes are not. But feedback always helps my next write!

Well, since you are “new”, so to speak - and is up to you and the other person - some consider even a re-arrangement a re-write - FYI; for e.g., drummer Ginger Baker for Cream - could have gotten paid for all the hits with his rearrangement that made “pedestrian” (to be consolidated here in length I use that word), those demos into “hits”. As well, some, again, “arguably” consider one word - since could be the “Hook” a co-write. Some say, needs to be, "substantially different. So, just fyi. I usually have to muck around so much, I up front clarify - it’s a co-write. You may want to think about what that means to you going forward.

For “me” and others I know, and you may come to know as you proceed - always, anywhere credit whomever you can on what they did. So, you here do not comment the author of the Lyrics. Again, not “me” - but, for you to decide to do so, *anywhere, especially “public facing” - but again, anywhere.
Me, I even, and go to great lengths to do so, even credit extremely old fragments, “cadences” as “source” if even that I did that - hunted for information of words like the “Iko Iko” song - public domain (many do not know, or didn’t), ± pending versions, and etc. Now, regarding PubDom, it is my work, and especially if a small fragment (aside from that, e.g., 4 words, or human grunts : ) as that goes…, “iko iko” gibberish…), all of it, my version, revision.
- Nonetheless, for example, Led Zep got beaten up for covering many songs that were not theirs (when the levy breaks, et alia), as “theirs” - so to speak… fully, in principle and if even Pub Dom (public domain) as I call it.
What happens is - folks see that, or do not see it (crediting of all for all), and may or may not want to collaborate, etc. due to it. So, it’s something to consider. If I ever did not, unknowingly - I have so much work to back up - it’s not intentional - while I don’t expect to ever have a problem - I won’t if do that much. There is a type of “unknown” copy write element - but is really in the weeds that somewhere on someone’s desk is a copy of what I just wrote and not common “language” composition.
For further example - two very close folks I worked with - we credited all, even, “Engineering”, “Guitar Backing”… as some labels to, “Craft Services” (food catered vendor) - it matters.
- Have I ever experienced not being credited, even after weeks of being “Producer”? Yes, and well - I don’t for them any longer, and etc. on that negativity. However too, somewhere a long ago “email” domain, address of “me” is embedded somewhere (job related, and yes a CR issue) and when called a “Liar” on a pressure interview (at a competing pharmaceutical corp) - well, there it is - proof, not lying, et alia. One never knows years down the road stuff that may come up - it’s a weird thing. (I always embedded my ID in Coding Comments… - corps that used to strip it back out stopped doing that when need it explained to them - I used to get calls for passwords at large pharma server farms they could not get into… hard to believe possibly, but true… anyway… I digress.)
Moreover - some, or, allot of this stuff I speak of used to be “taught” (I used to teach it : ) lol!) - much has changed in the past 25 - 30 years or so, and especially “online” which was not functional for many years until circa 2000 ish, arguably. I know that I could not give away a web sight prior to that and folks laughed at “shopping and school” online, - NEVER GONNA happen. Well, it did and NOT “new” tech then, had already been around a few years, not engaged until a “cultural” shift and a 6 oclock new declaration of “new” tech just out : )
- I had some ideas around your track and how you do stuff, however, it entails “engaging” manually one of the more “simplistic”, so to speak DAW’s… even an old 3.x version. It lends itself to “manual”, as in old Tape days work. It’s actually easier, more simplistic and effective in many ways. But, don’t want to engage that unless or until you’d be interested. To say it’s “easy” is not correct. However, the to much maligned Audacity - lends itself very well to a 1v1g (one voice one guitar) process since on any PC that Stereo WILL render fully separate mono tracks to then make “real” stereo. Frankly, IMO, arguably of course - you’d have no need for “effects” - it would all be the one recording, rendered then manually manipulated to ± 4 tracks 2 vox, 2 guitar - and then other guitar that makes a “Record”, “Recording”. One of the biggest issues some may be challenged by for some reason is time shifting a track - drag it over a few Sine Waves… one of the “biggest” mysteries in “head space” in real stereo - milliseconds in phase, matching the high, low of the horizontal S of it.
Then, these other packages can be engaged. If even decide then to do so.
I’ll add in a comment now since just talking about it to someone today in reference work:
- Most do not know that there was quite a disparate musical community, not that long ago where, “live instrument” musicians were mostly separated from “midi” musicians that then sang like karaoke (I comment with all due respect) … how it was.
- Now, live instrument musicians are in the minority, possibly. However - many of the folks I know of this new software music are amazing Producers, and EQ Engineers far beyond what I can or would do. (My stuff, good or bad sounds how I like it, make it sound : ) lol!! so if done for me and not a project as “backing” per a spec (someone else likes of course) - well, that’s how it goes.
- Part of the problem today is all the platforms on which stuff is heard. I’ve had folks complain about low Hz and “mud” - to be sure, it was not “me” or my mix, but their too Lo-end skull candy ear buds pre-load for low-pass thump. For me to mix for that, it is Nail in the Ear piercing Hi-Z’s, to scooped out Mids and thin Lows. I told one fellow one time to put on his glasses and clean out his ear buds - he was FLOORED that they were “packed” with wax and had thought he was loosing his hearing - and made all his tracks super loud - much to most folks dismay and “shock” when clicked play and the HP’s shot off their heads : )
- (Always use HP’s not Buds - so unsanitary for you ears unless diligent about cleaning - as a proof test - go ahead and wear regular ear plugs for “noise” suppression for an hour and set them aside for a week and come back and be very grossed out.)
So, those are just concepts above. I don’t think it would overwhelm you; and you can see why I asked first. AND - you know me by now - I’m no 250 character X’er, twitererer… I was raised on - “now - no less than 500 words” - how writing used to be seen.
As always, if makes not sense or do not agree - never a problem - feel free to disregard - it’s meant to facilitate, not *evaluate, or value for “taste”. There are rubrics for “punch lists” for stuff to look for, over, in “Production” (youtubes full of “stuff”) - the problem is, finding someone not trying to sell you something and from a Nashville PO Box. My family used to live in Nashville - so what? : ) lol! Well, the CBS producer I worked for I built stuff for cared that I did not, but that’s another irrelevant story : ) It’s all “krappolla” and a very very small world of per chance happenings.
