in 1982 I saw merle hagard sing this song right into reagans face on television and thought how brave that he had figuaratively given the president the finger. i changed some of the lyrics that i thought were too dated, and kept some lyrics that i would not have written myself. the ending is a cop out but the intention is clear.

this song is so slimple that i could play it in my sleep. Still, every song has its own challenges. with valley of the dolls, it was all i could to to get the phrasing right. with always on my mind, the challenge was to maintain the spirit of elvis without copying his style. thank you for listening!
